In poker players gamble on the strenght of their hand relative to the hands of their opponents. The winner of a hand (one ’round of poker’) is the player with typically the highest hand (in some forms the low hand wins) or the only remaining player in a hand because all the other players have folded (i.e. ‘laid down’) their hand. And there we touched one of the key elements of poker. You don’t always have to have the best hand to win, but you can also chase away your opponents by betting like you have a better hand than them!
